IT Services for Construction
The Context
For decades, the construction industry was slow to embrace IT. The unique nature of each contractor’s operation, building design processes, materials, timelines, and budgets all combined to make the task of adopting IT solutions extremely complex and often quite frustrating.
More recently, though, the compelling benefits of communications systems, project and workflow management programs, materials management software, design and imaging software, and other solutions have turned more construction firms into IT believers. In an industry where 80% of construction changes are caused by incomplete or incorrect data and 50% of an engineer’s time is spent looking for information or documents, IT can significantly improve profitability by shortening material search and delivery time, improving decision making, and accelerating schedules.
The Client
This Construction client is one of the leading estate building contractors Westchester County. Routinely, the client manages several projects on multiple sites. To support these efforts, they depend on a small network of 10 workstations that communicate between headquarters and various job sites.
The Problem
The company had come to a turning point with their IT network. They understood the powerful connection between more effective IT management and higher business growth and profitability. And they saw that they needed to use their current technology more effectively by adding new construction-specific solutions that would streamline workflow and maximize productivity. They needed an IT management specialist that could help them turn their vision into a valuable reality.
They chose PairM, the one IT services provider, they believed, that had the technical expertise, breadth of resources, and strategic mindset they needed.
PairM’s first task was to perform a comprehensive technical review their IT assets, evaluating the firm’s current technology infrastructure and IT needs relative to its stated business requirements.
Then, PairM recommended areas for improvement, suggesting that one of the best ways to streamline workflow and increase productivity was to enhance communication methods and data sharing techniques between remote job sites and headquarters. To do this, All Covered:
- Replaced their DSL connection with a T1 line to stabilize the network connection at headquarters which would eventually serve as the firm’s data management nerve center
- Developed a strategy for establishing high-performance technology environments at each project site — a major challenge because connectivity options vary greatly by geographic locations
- Installed a Small Business server to enable even more effective, higher performance centralized IT management, backup, and security.
Together, PairM and the client moved to the next phase of their IT management relationship--making the best use of current IT, planning for future IT investments, and assuring that IT remains a key enabler of continued business growth and profitability with an ongoing understanding.
How much Can PairM Save Your Organization in IT Investment? In two recent studies, the research firm, the Gartner Group, reported:
- The total cost of ownership (TCO) for a single PC--the cost of keeping a single unit operational--has risen to an industry average of between $4000 and $11,000 each year.
- Small and mid-size companies that move to a strategic IT services provider can save as much as 40% on their current IT investment.
Projecting these numbers for an organization such as XL Construction, annualized cost savings per computer could come to between $1600 and $4400. Multiplied by 10, this could mean a savings of between $16,000 and $44,000 for the organization.
